Let me start by stating that I know a little (or little) about Classic Mini cars and this listing is a great primer on how vehicles have sordid histories and my Mini archaeology has gone down the BMC/Lucas rabbit hole.
Purchased the Morris Mini Cooper in 2021 from the the second owner who had rolled the Mini in 1981. The Mini was parked in a barn on homestead and had not been touched/moved until 2021.
I found the Mini circa 2000 while looking for a Honda N600 car that was supposed to be near a small farm in Southwest Montana. Owner showed me the Mini and I took film photos. The Mini was not for sale at that time. I kept in touch with the owner and then he passed away in 2019 at 92 years old. I contacted his family and they sold me the car. Unfortunately the title could not be signed over by the owner's wife and I dealt with family estate issues. Contacted the State Treasures Office (DMV in Montana) and was instructed that a BONDED title was my easiest path to getting a title.
I obtained a BONDED title for ,300 (Low NADA Book Value) which lasts for three (3) years and expires 6/07/2025. Internet Search will explain what this involves. I have the original title from 1980 and there are no former owners of the Mini who would have a claim. The Mini has a 17-digit VIN on title which complies with Montana and Federal regulations when the Mini was inspected by law enforcement official.
I intended to restore the Mini. I power washed and cleaned the entire car to see what condition it was in. Look at the videos to see how well preserved the Mini is. I spent more time wet sanding/buffing/waxing the paint just because. I wrote down every identification number and stamping and am including my handwritten notes in the listing.
I reached out to Heritage Garage who specializes in Classic Minis and paid for an evaluation of the car. I received an education in how many ways a Mini can be violated in 50 years! The basics are: Mini was shipped to USA as an Export model that was originally right hand drive which is rare. The original body shell was replaced with a 1961 shell sometime before the second owner. The Cooper S mechanicals/drivetrain/bonnet/trunk were swapped in. The original "wet" suspension was changed to "dry". I included the evaluation in the listing.
MONGREL MINI is my name for this car. It opens up many philosophical/existential concerns. Is it a true Cooper "S"? Another "fake" MK1? "Tribute/Clone" car? I'm just putting out the facts that I see and am trying to show all the information I have acquired.
I intended on getting the car running and driving and leaving it "as-is". Other option I was looking at was to cut the top off. I live in a flat and uncurvy part of Montana and love my small cars but now am thinking a DeTomaso Pantera is a better choice. From a selling point I think this car would be a great candidate to go back to U.K. especially since it was right-hand drive originally. My UK/N. Ireland/Wales acquaintances can't believe that there is hardly any rust and that the turn signal stalk light is still intact.
I try to make my listings as informational as possible so that there should be no question of what the winning bidder is receiving.
